A group of Tennesseeans formed the Tennessee Volunteer Chapter of the Solid Waste Association of North America on June 10, 1991 at a meeting in Nashville. There were 32 people in attendance representing all sectors involved in mixed solid waste.
The Chapter was formed due to the lack of an organization in Tennessee devoted solely to the business of solid waste. In light of the stringent landfill requirements and the Solid Waste Act of 1991, it was felt by interested parties that this was the time to "do or die."
MISSION STATEMENT
Our mission is to advance environmentally sound and economical management practices for all members of the solid waste industry in Tennessee. Through solid waste education and training, we will work to ensure a safe environment for future generations.
VISION STATEMENT
Volunteers educating, communicating, and innovating solid waste practices in Tennessee.

- offer improved professional development opportunities, and
- develop a regulatory/legislative advocacy program.
